Within the maintenance of a fireplace or wood-burning stove, it is essential to clean the glass of the fireplace door. This glass tends to blacken very easily and it is important to clean it frequently in order to keep the glass impeccable and to be able to enjoy the spectacle of the flames to the full. However, it is not necessary to clean the glass every time you use the fireplace.
One of the most influential aspects for its maintenance is the use of hardwoods, so we recommend you to read our post “What is the best firewood for the fireplace?” where you will find everything you need to know about firewood for your fireplace.
Now… Let’s get to those tricks!
Cleaning the fireplace glass with ash
During the operation of our fireplace or cooker soot is created. This makes the glass dirty. One of the tricks is to use ash to clean the glass of your wood-burning stove or fireplace. How do you do this?
In the tray of the stove or fireplace itself you will find the ash. Take a handful of the lighter ash and mix it with a little water. A thick paste will form and, using a lint-free cloth or kitchen paper, rub the glass in a circular motion.
Once the paste is gone, dip the cloth or paper back into the paste and continue until the process is complete.
Finally, remove the paste with a damp cloth or newspaper and dry with a kitchen towel.
Unbelievable, but it works!
Cleaning the chimney glass with household products
Are you one of those who use home remedies for everything? This is your trick! You will need:
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- 1 tablespoon of ammonia
- 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol
- 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
- A few drops of dishwashing liquid
- A little water
Make the mixture and spread it on the glass with a sponge. Rinse with water and dry with kitchen paper.
Cleaning the glass with vinegar
Vinegar and water is the perfect mixture for a clean and shiny finish. First of all, we remove the soot and other ash residues from the glass with a piece of kitchen paper. Mix a little vinegar with water in a spray bottle and spray it on the glass. Finally, rub the liquid off and dry with kitchen paper.
Clean with glass cleaner or oven cleaner
Spray either of them on your glass and follow the manufacturer’s advice. Glass cleaner can be removed immediately with kitchen paper. In the case of oven cleaner, you must leave it to act for a few minutes, remove it with a damp sponge and dry it with kitchen paper.
The most expensive but infallible solution
This will be the most expensive of all the options. It consists of using a steam cleaner. This machine cleans and removes all the dirt from the glass. It will also be useful for cleaning the wood-burning stove as a whole.
Last but not least, at Panadero we recommend you to clean the glass when it is a little warm or tempered, as it will be much harder to clean the dirt when it is cold.
